Kill all Normies was a pretty great book in a lot of ways but one thing that Nagle got wrong was her attempts to frame the thing that got labeled AS "the alt right" as part of a historical ethos of artistic transgression that was typically apolitical but found a home on "the right" in the 2010s because "the left" had become so gay and censorious. There was, after all, plenty of right wing signaling for transgression's sake going on in the 1990s: Goad, Parfrey, Death in June, Boyd Rice, etc.. I’m extremely jealous of people who can casually use hard drugs, like opioids or crack, from time to time without picking up hard physical habits. As long as these companies are doing their best to monitor who is using their site, and to rid their sites of illegal material, what criminal liability could they actually face that doesn’t violate the first amendment ? If Pornhub is incentivizing criminal trafficking networks somehow, or not banning illegal content in due time, then it’s criminally liable, sure, but otherwise, how is it? We had a great Thanksgiving party last night, small gathering with my best friends, and my wife made a beautiful meal. My friend brought LSD, for some reason, and I decided to take some. Last time he’d given me LSD it was pretty mellow. This time, however, I got absolutely blasted. I took a 1/4 of a hit. We were watching the episode of the Sopranos when Tony killed Chrissy and then goes to Vegas and takes peyote. Tony’s psychedelic insight compelled me to take more acid, so I took another piece from the sheet. Big, big mistake, or at least I felt like a mistake during the experience. It seemed like no more than 10 minutes before I was wracked with “the fear,” with beautiful and strange visual distortions all around me.
I went deep into my own psychology, and I felt like, for a brief moment, that I could see myself. I realized, in some deep way, that I truly need to stop sweating the small stuff. That people’s media opportunism and petty in-group squabbles were ultimately meaningless to engage with. I came face to face with my predilection towards resentment, and I didn’t like what I saw. I wouldn’t say I have any more sympathy for cowards, but it’s more that I intuited that I need to stop being so driven by my base emotions.
2025 will by my year, I think, as long as I can rid myself of these petty grievances. I have good things in my life, things to cherish. To build something bigger, I need to focus more on those things, and much less than on my anger, jealousy, and tendency towards contempt.

I’m re-watching the OC, the nighttime soap series that focused on rich and beautiful high school kids living in Newport Beach in the early 2000s, struck by its racial dynamics. Seven episodes into its first season, I immediately notice the show’s racial dynamics. There have been exactly three non white characters depicted so far:
1. Violent black and Latino gang members in jail after protagonist Ryan gets locked up
2. Violent Mexican sexual assaulters when female co-lead Marissa gets wasted on Vicodin and Tijuana
3. Stern, Asian lady school mistress who doesn’t want a lowly poor white boy like Ryan into the elite academic that she lords over
Obviously, the show is playing on stereotypes, but shouldn’t a soap opera be allowed to indulge in stereotypes?
The OC came out in Feb, 2007. Obama was on the campaign trail, almost anyways, and about to take power. Soon, it wound be impossible to make a show like this ever again and eventually, Hollywood would be so captured by its white guilt that it would end up remaking these kinds of shows (Gossip Girl, Roswell) with forced diversity casts. All of the remakes fall flat, awful parodies of the originals without any of the lurid addictiveness that the originals had.
I think the reason for this is simple: creators used to simply not give a fuck. They wanted to get the work out and entertain the audience. DEI destroyed America at the most fundamental level: media and entertainment. Once creators had to start checking off diversity boxes, they lost the freedom of their own inner voices. Their muses became captives of the post Obama ideology. Over correction isn’t just a social ill, it’s THE social ill of our lifetimes.

OxyContin and then Fentanyl completely demystified the bohemian myth surrounding opioid abuse; hardly a bright side, the opioid epidemic is the most obscene plague of the 21st Century. I explored this concept in Communions, my book from 2021, of course, but it remains interesting to me. We attached all this false mystique to heroin addiction through the culture we consumed: Burroughs is the main offender, but it goes back to DeQuincey and probably earlier than that. Modigliani loved morphine. Artaud went crazy, aided by morphine. In the ‘90s, Cobain, Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting all glamorized opioid addiction, and while it’s not the main factor, I’d say the cultural normalization of heroin during the era of the codification of subversive “alt” subculture - “indie rock” and “indie films” sold to consumers by corporations, etc - played a small part during the epidemic in the 2000s and beyond.
Now that all of our lives have been impacted by the epidemic, either directly (ourselves or a loved one) or observationally (the schizzed out fent heads attacking everyone on the streets of NY and SF), there’s nothing cool about this drug. Very few, I’d assume, use the drug to explore this hip world they read about or consumed, because that micro-culture exploded as opioids became consumed by everyone from injured athletes and housewives over prescribed these drugs by shady and greedy doctors.
Opioids ceased being a sub culture and, tragically, became a part of culture. Of society. Drug misery and death became commonplace realities of all American lives, and the most idyllic of rural and suburban communities became shooting dens. Twin Peaks replaced by Twin Peaks: The Return.
Coincidentally, the only “drug movie” of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s that actually grasps the reality of drugs (they ruin your life completely with little exception) is Requiem for a Dream, which fell out of favor because gen xers and millennials regarded it as “preachy” or extreme in its depiction of addiction. But in 99.99 percent of people who use opioids develop crippling physical addictions that rewire the reward pathways of the brain, replacing the lust for food, sex, and adventure with totalizing need for a substance. Maybe you regard Darren Aronofsky as a bit gauche, but the extremity of his film is far more consistent with the reality of addiction than what we see with John Travolta’s suave hit man charachter in Pulp Fiction, shooting dope, driving down the high way and blissing out to surf rock (great scene, of course.)
