The correct take on the Ukraine War never came down to moralism for me. It’s not about which leader is more authoritarian (they’re both a little authoritarian) or which side had more Nazi militias in its militaries (they both have Nazi militias), it came down to the simple fact that Ukraine could never win. No one ever thought it could actually win, and we’ve essentially been funding a years long bloodbath with a completely predetermined result. To advocate for NATO involvement in the conflict was merely to advocate for prolonged death. Pretty nasty stuff all around.

New York is a shit city for music and has been since at least the late ‘80s or mid ‘90s, when hip-hop was at it best. Obviously, most bands worth seeing come through here, but very few good bands are FROM here. I think it stems from the nature of the city and its “scenes,” as soon as a band starts playing here they are immediately connected to some hipster hype clique where nothing is ever created and every style is regurgitated out as some vulgar form of indie fashion. It’d not even music made to sell, which would at least be forgivable, it’s music made as clickbait for photo blogs. The last great New Yorker rock star is of course Dominick Fernow, but aside from his label Hospital Productions I can’t think of a single good thing coming out of this town.

read Lester’s anthology book when I was about 16 front to back while at my parents ski house in Maine. I never much cared for skiing (the cold, the lugging the boots and skis and bullshit around) so sometimes I’d stay in the house and read and listen to cds on my walkmen player. I was consuming an insane amount of new stuff at the time, films books and weird music. But Lester’s writing really opened something in me. For one, I always considered Van Morison to be boring dad radio music, but after reading this I immediately bought the CD and it changed my life, it’s still one of my favorite records of all time and has gotten me through more difficult times than I can remember. Furthermore, the idea of writing about art, as opposed to making it, seemed ever more like a real possibility for me. At first, of course I regarded critics as just inferior boons, people envious of the artists they wrote about, dulling the world with opinions. But Lester’s writing was so obviously a work of art in its on way, cultivating an aesthetic through his own cultural obsessions. Furthermore, he had a persona and a legacy. Lester broke the barriers down between artist, writer and journalist. He was like a gonzo dadaist journalist. And here I am.

I’ve been rereading the sadly shitlibbed William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition, which I regard as his only great work after Neuromancer. It’s funny, the critics at the time hit the book for being so rooted in the late MTV era it was written in, and for sure it’s dated. But this to me only proves how stupid it is to judge an art work by it feeling “dated,” art works are dated, made at specific moments in time, in response to feelings and malaises of that time. Even something like Norman Mailer’s Ancient Evenings is a modern novel, with all the assumptions about the content made by a modern man. To worry about something being dated is to deny the very importance of the moment you live in right now. And holy shit, we are living in the absolute crux of history; at the end of something and the beginning of something else. The western liberal order has collapsed, we won, and society is shifting towards something both radical and familiar. We need to express what we’re feeling, thinking, and seeing. For posterity. For the future. For some hipster asshole 20 years from now to look at our work and write it off as “dated”.
