Visual Propaganda #5: Images Curated by Joe Speier
NY-based artist Joe Speier curates a set of mostly drawn and disturbing visual materials
Joe W. Speier is a NY-based artist that makes sculptural paintings that employ all manner of discarded household materials: nail polish remover, BIC pens, mirrors, erasers, and otherwise. A humorous proletarian aesthetic courses through his work that often feels like a direct rebuke to the bourgeois tastes of the art world that he’s more or less embedded in.
Joe is obsessed with the low value imagery of DeviantArt and memes, the images people produce when they are feeling unease but lack the technical ability to be able to do so proficiently. “I love the idea of someone feeling a very complex, negative emotion and having the need to express it through art, but totally lacking the skills or tools to do so in a “valuable” way. I find that failure often results in humor,” he once said. In this curatorial set, Speier displays some of those images.
